Fresh, Keeping it

Spice up your humdrum library life by getting a fresh haircut, trendy glasses, or a handsome new cardigan every now and then.

And do the same with your library blog or web site. A periodic change of color and/or layout will only make your content seem all the more brilliant.

(Note to readers: This is where you all post and tell us how you liked the old layout so much better ...)

I suggest you create a committe to determine which layout is best.

Since I read your blog on the aggregator, I can't quite recall the old layout? Was it nicer? Is this one nicer? Can you put the old one back on, then this one so people can compare? Haha, best and keep on blogging.

You didn't have user tests for the various old/new formats before changing?

More precisely, your director didn't draft a group to deliberate options, including but not limited to user testing, and then the group made a recommendation to your director which had neither weight nor urgency behind it and was summarily never acted upon?

And then changes were made arbitrarily, leaving the public service staff to 1) discover the changes on their own and 2) explain the changes to every patron that angrily storms the desk, demanding to know what happened to the old version?

Are you sure you're really a librarian...?

Old layout please.

The plain white is better than the putrid green, but not as nice as the polka dots. Old layout please.

Then again, say it loud and proud: This is my blog and I’ll do what I damn well please! The rest of you can chuff off if you don’t like it!

As you sadly know, you will never be able to do it in your professional roles, but I will keep reading.

so fresh and so clean, clean. I like it. And at least the change has given all of us something to talk about.

I like this one better than the green.

You could also make changing the layout into a 12 (or more)-point action plan, minutely detailing all the 'actionable items' and deliverables. Then design a user survey by committee, then get sidetracked by the design and server problems with the user survey as well as the turf wars with the systems people, like we're doing in our library...

I'm gonna wait six months, then get back to you on that.
