The best costume for your library’s Halloween party is one that requires a lot of explanation (e.g., minor characters from Star Trek). Also, be aware that even if you do choose a sexy costume over a scary one, your coworkers will still most likely be frightened.

Shouldn't the choice be an old bedsheet painted with "130"?
Someone came dressed as Wilma Flintstone. The non-baby boomers were rather confused, they kept thinking it was Alice Kramden.
We did Idioms and simple costumes this year - changing for every class hour. One hour I put an E on my chest and my assistant had paperclips all over her shirt. I was the "E" male and she was the attachment. Another hour I put nametags all over me with different names - I was a person with multiple personalities. . . things like that. We had a blast and so did the kids trying to guess what we were.
No, doctors and lawyers don't generally dress up, but maybe they don't have as much fun as librarians?
I have no problem dressing up for Halloween and in fact may use the 130/bedsheet idea next year!
Some of my colleagues wear their gowns from the Renaissance Fair on Halloween. Life is too short not to have fun once in a while, and those gowns are too gorgeous & expensive to wear once a year. Of course, it is optional.
Actually some lawyers and doctors dress up. I've worked with both. It depends on whether or not they like to dress up and if their environment allows it. Lots of physicians offices dress up. I would LOVE to dress up but my environment doesn't allow it. :(

My father is a physician; he covers his lab coat in Halloween pins, passes out candy, and wears vampire fangs. It is also my parents' wedding anniversary, so he pulls out all the stops to celebrate.
