Files, Organizing your

Save all of your electronic files to your computer's desktop. A screen filled with overlapping icons will no doubt serve as testament to your ability to organize information and will instill confidence with your library patrons who've been wasting their time with folders and organized file structures.

The harridan I work with does that. Everything she's ever managed to churn out in Word or anything else is out on her desktop. It's such a mess now that she can't even use her own computer.

We have 58 PCs in various states of half-ass working order... she has files all over their desktops.

I noticed the other day that she left 6 or 8 files saved to my desktop... I deleted them. And smiled.

Oooooo, what if you just create a folder for each one of your files and have all of those folders on your desktop . . . myself, I like to create a virtual labyrinth of files within files within files; So that if anyone other than myself needed to find one of my files, they would have to guess the file name and run a search of the whole computer . . . password protection is for lazy people

Better still is to keep copies of different versions of each file in a hundred folders on your desktop. When the time comes to update the file, pick one at random, do the update, save and forget. Next time, open a different copy, do the update, save and complain that the PC's lost your last bit of work. Repeat ad nauseam.

Version control is for people who don't want to be chief librarians.

Be sure to place a footer at the bottom of your document with the file structure of where it is saved to. But... don't let it actually represent reality. Be especially sure that this footer is on documents that are printed and then distributed to people who will never, ever be going into those files, nor do they care where you happen to store your hand-out files.
