The Media, On Saturating mercilessly with regards to your supposed hipness

It's not enough to get national media attention in the New York Times for being a young librarian who doesn't fit all of the dumb, tired stereotypes so make sure that you make your presence as ubiquitous as possible by yakking to every reporter in the New York area about your little group hangout in Disgusting, Irritating, Self-Entitled Hipster Hell (aka Williamsburg and Greenpoint). And as for trying to remake the image of the typical librarian, how about not going out of your way to tell the entire journalistic world 'See, we're normal. We leave our houses just like you do. Really, we do.'

Librarians are nerds. Embrace it or chose another profession. We aren't cool. Get used to it.

This is one of my favorite sites as of just learning about it two minutes ago!

I think that article helped me get a date with a non librarian. Thanks New York Times!

so true.

more important for librarians? creativity. REAL creativity. Imagination. New ideas.

This is totally unrelated to tattoos or youth. [sigh]

Sorry for the rant. Thanks for the posts; they've been terrif of late.

No one in the universe cares about these people or anything they do.

Relax. Dourness does nothing to raise the profile of the profession.

You know, I'd like totally respond to such snarky comments as these, but I'm entirely too busy getting the LC call number for Arm Tattoos tattooed on my arm. See, not only is it so very librarydorkhip but it's also meta. I have TWO Masters dammit.

I love that everyone's outraged at this, like we're mobilizing to storm Brooklyn and grind every pair of cat's eye glasses we find into the pavement. Please call me before the bus leaves for this event, incidentally.

But honestly, the Effing Librarian summed up this whole brouhaha perfectly.

My Personal Hell would be to have to manage this hip, self-absorbed crew.

A little goes a long way with any hipster crowd. Give me a Book Club anyday, or a bong.

Or what about the fact that the guy had a tatoo of the National Reserves or the fact that the girl said, "I'm just speaking Dewey." Who the hell says that? That is so the opposite of cool!

Dour is good. We once had T-shirts made up with the logo "Glad to be glum."

Hey, as long as they launder their "thrift shop clothes" until they don't smell like old armpit odor anymore, I'm happy to work with the young hipsters and take advantage (i.e., use them) of their youthful energy (i.e., start them out on the salary floor), until they feel as old and nerdy as I do.

The assumption that the group is self absorbed is unfounded. Yes I can see that article was a bit silly, but since I was at the party, I feel the need to state that I think the blogging world is making too big a deal about this. It's really just a bunch of people with similar interests hanging out.

Also not mentioned in the article, part of the purpose of the party, besides meeting other librarians, (which most of us being new to our jobs can;t do at ALA since we can't go) was collecting books for Books through Bars, an organization that collects books and distributes them to local prison libraries.
