You must work at a high-end library - I cannot imagine that any of patrons would be at all alarmed by the phrase - or that they would have any idea what wikipedia even is.
Be sure to preface that with "Because it's never wrong,"
I was going to suggest this as our referece policy about a year ago. Until it dawned on me it would be taken seriously by my managers.
*secret confession* when I am doing online reference, and only when other librarians aren't looking--I use wikipedia to look up the topic to get to the links at the end of the article. I can get to the related nonprofit or government link on a topic that way. Of course, I would never tell the customer I am doing this.
"This will amuse you while alarming the library patron."
That will definitely work for me!! Love it.
The sad thing is that most of them would NOT be alarmed because they use Wikipedia for all their research.
