Up, Warming it

A good reference librarian should be courteous to his or her colleagues by warming the seat of the chair at the reference desk during a shift. Your fellow librarians will thank you for the posterior warmth your inactivity provides.

Be careful not to take this advice too far... no one wants to sit in a sweat-soaked seat. If your ass sweats when you answer reference questions, bring a towel.

i've always felt a bit squeamish about this issue and prefer to log in to the ref computer while standing up, or fiddle around with stuff on the desk until the seat returns to room temperature.

No No Your ass should sweat but not your face. If your face sweats THEN you are in the wrong field.

If your ass and face sweat at the ref desk, you are definitely in the wrong profession.

Since the comments seem to be focusing on functions of the human body, I'm feeling okay about adding that while a too-warm reference desk chair is kind of icky, it isn't nearly as icky as going into the restroom when it's chilly and finding that the toilet seat is way, way too warm.

I share the reference desk with multiple people. Some people leave it warmer than others. But I hate the clammy keyboard and greasy telephone receiver more than anything else. It's less about germs and more just the ick factor.

This is excellent advice! I'll share it with my colleagues at the reference desk next week when we go back to work after the long weekend. Fortunately we're all very clean where I work, and this has never been a problem...in fact this is the first time I've ever thought about such a thing. We're more concerned with catching germs off library patrons who use our phone! I'll monitor our reference seat in the future to detect any strange temperature rises, and may consider bringing my own cushion if the problem arises.
