Exclaiming, Job Search
Unless you have ever worked for Yahoo!, there is absolutely no excuse for using exclamation marks in your library job application letter or resume.

A polite librarian is a good librarian.

At my library we will also forgive people who have worked for Stat!Ref.
What about websites, blog addresses, or this little sign ~...Hmmm??
My goodness you're picky. Punctuation is the least of it. Candidates waxing poetic about their "attention to detial" or other similar variations are entirely more painful to witness. And make sure your cover letter is for the correct job and not for a job at some other place. And please don't talk about how you'd like to work at the campus because it's so beautiful unless you're applying to be a gardener. I don't care if you think the place is pretty - tell me what you can do that's relevant. (Now there's a sentence worthy of an exclamation point.)
I had an app come through with numerous exclamation points (grouped together) and, horror of horrors, a smiley face :-( I couldn't have hired that applicant no matter how qualified the applicant was.
My favorite is email addresses like "fuzzymonkeybutt69@whatever.com". How hard is it to create a professional sounding gmail account? I immediately file those applicants under "highly unlikely."
If you're interested in true stories from librarians around the country that are just as crazy as "!" and fuzzymonkey butts, check out www.merrylibrarian.com. You'll love it. :)
Can I just add that listing 10-key adding machine, typing, and dictation doesn't exactly shout 2.0?
