A polite librarian is a good librarian.
Be sure to write out what you're going to say. That way you avoid accidentally saying, "Am I there?"
Equally, avoid being the supervisor calling in, saying in a normal voice, "oh, is that [name]?", then in a gravely voice, "I'm siiiick", then normal voice again, "OK, Bye!" Way to set an example.
Well, it's a bad idea to show you're in high demand and then not be there, because cranky supervisors will try to insist that you never take a day off because you're so 'valuable'.
I love this blog. After working in a library for three years, every posting makes me laugh.
To really make yourself appear valuable, be sure to come into work all day every Saturday and Sunday. While there, send out lots of mass e-mails, especially to your Dean or Director. Also, try to bring up the fact that you work weekends in meetings whenever you can. This will create the impression that you are very busy, and must work 7 days a week to get everything done. If all that fails, get yourself a "Look at Me" T-shirt and wear it every day. Your colleagues will appreciate your work ethic, and won't resent you at all.
Also be sure to wrangle other phones so the desk clerks answering the phone don't recognize the number.
I've also called in with fake questions that were unanswerable. This keeps the other librarians on their toes. It is also helpful to say things like, "So and so (using your name here) was able to help me with this last time I called." Job security.
