Chairs, Pushing in

Librarians should militantly enforce the “pushing in” of recently vacated public chairs in their libraries. As you make your rounds through the library, forcefully bump the chairs against the tables as a passive aggressive warning of your quiet rage for any future potential violators.

I can never understand why it is so difficult to push in a freaking chair when you get up. I am constantly making the rounds in my library, pushing in chairs that are left two feet out from the table. IS THAT REALLY NECESSARY?!

I am not a librarian but, as a lover of libraries, I love your blog.

Really, this is a skill we all learned in Kindergarten that continually applicable.

There are days where I want to do something wild...like put all the chairs up on the library tables, or flip them upside down...just to prove to students that they did in fact use that chair and are now responsible for putting it away! Tired of the shrug and ignore routine, lol.

You could always take the chairs away and replace them with carpet squares. Patrons will have to "earn" their right to use a chair. With bribes.

I say we blow our library budgets on getting chairs with built in tazzers that give people a little electric zap as they get up so they don't forget!!

Oddly enough, some of the staff members that complain about this are just as bad. At the end of every staff meeting, I invariably have to push the chairs in for them.

When I was working in a branch of SeattlePL we made the rounds and pushed in chairs as a way to "inconspicuously" check in on our often illegally and/or rule-breakingly-engaged patrons. "Oh, I'm not leaning over your shoulder every 30 minutes to see if I should call the cops, I'm just pushing in chairs."

Our computer chairs have bases that are so wide that you can easily trip over the legs if you just notice the width of the chair and not the width of the base. In spite of this, nobody seems to push in their chairs, so anyone walking down the aisle better be ready for an obstacle course that will put their life at risk!

I also push in chairs in a 'deliberate' way, however, I wonder if I'm just demonstrating to students that eventually we'll push their chair in for them?

I find it hard to poke fun at coworkers because sometimes I actually like them. But this is perfect!

Also, I would love to know you in real life. You tell people they are stupid, without actually calling them stupid. Amazing gift.

I am the lone practitioner in a library and this is my major gripe! I push in approx 60 chairs at the end of each day in my college library and would love to know how to combat the laziness of the cohort! It drives me crazy!
