Things to avoid:
- correcting them for emptying your recycling into the regular trash
- playing computer games while they empty your waste basket
- regularly dribbling coffee all the way from the coffee shop to your office
- refusing to participate in idle chit-chat about the weather
- leaving your pay-check stub face-up on top of the trash
- snorting like a pig when they crash the library potluck dinner (bearing no food)
- writing "custodians suck!" on the bathroom wall in your own feces

Rule number one of any workplace is to be friendly to secretaries, maintenance people and custodial staff. These people wield a great deal of power and can easily make your life hell.
Yeah, that's what they tell you in college or grad school, but I found out the hard way it is NOT true. Just the opposite. I have been harassed (sexually and verbally) by every single janitor and secretary I've encountered no matter how nice I am. I now find the bigger bitch I am the more they try to please me!
"leaving your pay-check stub face-up on top of the trash"
LOL
custodians and shipping & receiving rule the world ... oh and don't forget the power of the administrative ass. One day I had a vicious paper cut and it was the departmental secratary who had the bandaids. Bandaids and Petty Cash - now that is where the power is.

ROFL!!!
Custodians are the rulers of the world. They control the toilet paper.
Sand paper you mean.
I bring my own t.p., kleenex's, paper towels, bandades, etc. and lock them in my desk.
P.S.
Feces comment,perfection!
Do you write your name on your toilet paper, kleenex, etc.???
(see hoarding supplies comment)
Our janitors know exactly where the security cameras fall short. My desk is included in that area and I know my phone, desk and computer have been used at their leisure. I also got a small clock stolen overnight--no one else was in the library during that time. But, no proof, no video, so I couldn't accuse anyone and never got it back. My director is NOT concerned. She doesn't think we need a couple more security cameras aimed at the BACK of the library. (She will when the computers start disappearing.)
p.s. We are lucky if they manage to empty all the trash cans. They routinely don't fill the paper towel and t.p. dispensers. They never check them. We have to bring it to their attention with notes and phone calls.
