If you think you might be a hipster librarian, but you're not exactly sure, ask yourself the following question: "Do I socialize with other librarians?"
If you answered yes to this question, you are probably not as hip as you think you are.

What if my librarian friends are creative and funny? What if they belly dance? What if they are over 40, like me?
I don't. The very idea!!
Wow. That NY Times article is pretty embarrassing.
I think the question can be modified slightly. If you socialize with the other librarians in person, definitely not hip. If you use MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and/or any other 2.0 toy to do your socializing without actually seeing anyone in person, definitely hip.

The gist of that NYT clip: 'librarians are just like regular people.' Very condescending.
Why would the NY times publish such a tedious article? Does anyone outside of that tiny circle of poseurs care that they even exist?
The big problem with the article was that they found those librarians in New York. You can prefix any profession with "young hip" and find examples in New York. Big deal. Hey, maybe they can do a weekly series. Next week: hipster garbage men!
What if my librarian friends are in gypsy punk rock bands? Well, punk rock bands. Well, were. Well, kind of. Well, played them on the radio when they were DJing....
hmmm
Look at me! I'm a librarian! Look! Good grief. People who work together in socialising shocker. Most of my friends are librarians (as am I), I've just emailed them demanding that we come up with a group name for ourselves. To think, all those times we've gone out and gotten drunk on cocktails and not invited the national press along...
