ALA, Going to
Don't feel guilty about spending your library's money to travel to ALA. It is the one time of year when your colleagues and staff actually get to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the library without you in it. Everyone will agree that that is money well spent.

For that to work, you actually have to have your library's money to use (or your own for that matter). ;)
Generally, if you're a librarian - it's your own money.

Which is why I'm here and not at ALA.
If you pay out of pocket to go to ALA, you must be retarded.
Why bother going to ALA to discuss how bad things are when you can hear the same thing at your local library?

Must. Go. To. ALA. For the freebies of course. And the free booze at parties. You did not get invited? You do not know the right people.
Don't spare a thought to the recession. Those imminent cuts to library jobs and services aren't your problem. So you've been to ALA almost every year for the past 5, surely you'll pick up tips on how to ensure that 1 person does the work of 5. Hey, the way you look at it, you're saving the library money by going on their dime. Make sure not to share the opportunity with anyone - gosh knows, there will be less money for your per diem.
Hay, these librarians could use a much needed mini vacation for all the work and help they provide in the open libraries.

Airfare: $800

If your airfare costs $800 round trip you must be doing something wrong...
I see bunch a of Drunken Librarians with Mardi Gras beads reading books from the banned book list...
How the heck does someone manage to spend $500 on conference registration? I'm attending for the full 6 days and added a couple of meal-included programs and my registration is less than $300...and airfare was also under $300.
