Shoes, Wearing sensible

A good librarian should always wear sensible shoes.  Be aware though, that sometimes the most sensible choice is a pair of six-inch spiked heels that can be wielded as weapons against obnoxious library patrons or coworkers.

Dear Polite Librarian,
Are you male or female? Just curious since you write of spiked heels.

A six-foot male librarian in spike heels keeps most obnoxious patrons in line.

(Particularly if also wearing a sequin dress)

You have one of those too?

whats up with the noisy flip flops?

I once went for a job and the librarian looked me up and down, particularly concentrating on the shoes. She said - "you'll do - you're wearing sensible shoes"

Lately I'm baffling people by wearing those 'Vibram Fivefinger' shoes that are like foot-gloves and have separate toes. I find them extremely comfortable, but people who have never seen them often believe they are silly socks. Are these sensible?

Vibrams are decidedly sensible.

And, flip-flops have saved be from getting run down by a book cart. The flipping and flopping serve a similar function as bear bells.
