Books, Bland

If your library's Banned Books Week display is too racy for your patrons, consider adding a complementary display of Bland Books.

Ask the readers: What would be in your Bland Books display case?

All of the Mitford books by Jan Karon, The Cat Who books by Lillian Jackson Braun, anything by Richard Paul Evans or Nicholas Sparks....

Sarah Plain and Tall, at least they didn't falsly advertise it.

I thought for a minute you had misspelled "Palin".

Everything by Nora Roberts

I am so with you Erica! A patron came into the library the other day and said how much they love Nora Roberts, and I started reading one of her books, I swear I couldn't keep my eyes open! So boring.
Animal Farm is by far my least favorite.

Here's a mixed bag for ya: Goosebumps, Mary-Kate and Ashley, Baby Sitter Series (Including Little Sisters), Twilight Series, Barbara Cartland, R.L. Stine, Harlequin, etc, etc. I find that the more books written on a certain subject by the same person, the more bland the writing.

Berenstain Bears. I can't read those to a kid without falling asleep...I guess that's what they're for.

The Froggy books.
"Froggy?" said Mom.
"Whaaaat?" said Froggy.

Any of the more recent Mary Higgins Clark books - her older stuff is great but the new stuff is so formulaic that I can no longer read her books.

Danielle Steel. I have never read the books, but I've read the dust jacket summaries of many of them. They all sound the same, just with different names and settings.

Most "Christian" fiction

My wife once brought back a book from the library for which the dust-jacket comments stated that the author "Served up genre conventions as if they were straight from her garden". Someone actually considered it praise enough to put on the back cover.
