Reference desk (Part two), Timeliness at the

A professional librarian should publicly berate colleagues who show up two minutes late for a reference desk shift. How else will the offending librarian know that he or she is inhibiting your immediate need to get a candy bar from the staff vending machine?

or even better, your supervisor should berate you, in front of all staff, if you forget to go to the ref. desk at 8:30 am in spring session when NO ONE is on campus, let alone in the Library...yep, that's always pleasant...

how about a collegue shrieking insanely at you in front of your boss, your other collegues AND the entire line of patrons waiting for help-and no one, not even the boss, does anything about it. That does wonders for your self-esteem.

make that colleague(s)

there is also the curious group of colleagues who sneak in behind you and linger for a few minutes silently instead of actually speaking to you to let you know they are relieving you.

Then again there is the colleague who is routinely and continuously 2-3 minutes late for her shift. No apologies no nothing, but if anyone was late to relieve her, she'd just leave.

It is not a big deal to be on time.

...yet said professional librarian never bothers to come out and work their shift on time.

The "something came up" excuse gets old. When they bother to use it.

though sometimes the only thing getting you through that shift is the knowledge that a Snickers bar is merely 65 cents and four minutes away!!
