- Pick a corny acronym.
- Find words that loosely fit letters in acronym.
- Form a subcommittee to look into changing the name of the committee to a fit a new corny acronym.

Oh God...
There is nothing more stressful than a bunch of librarians naming anything. The acronym game is like scraping nails on a blackboard.
Some other local government services are so dismissive of acronyms that they occasionally come a cropper. Our council once had Community Unity Neighbourhood Teams.
Ugh. TAZ - Teen ActivitieZ! Seriously.
We've got CHUBS--Card catalogs, Hidden databases, Unprocessed [materials], & BacklogS. I'm just thankful I don't have to go to the meetings anymore.
I'm not a librarian, but we had a Strategic Planning Advisory Team, or SPAT, at our company. Envisioning the future, I guess . . .
The shelving advisory group I was on wanted to name our group SHAG. Someone had to point out what that meant before we could convince them to just go with SAG.
Okay, not a library acronym but still pretty bad; one of the local universities was set to be named Curtin University of New Technologies, right up until the university sports press conference.
We have the "New York Online Virtual Electronic Library" or NOVEL which contains, of course, non-fiction databases. To avoid this confusion, I think, they are starting to use the recursive NOVELny.
There is also the USAPATRIOT Act which is also an acronym. I always call it the USAPAT RIOT Act.
RAT - Reference Action Team.
Doesn't every library have a RAT?
I LOVE this site. Thanks for the smiles and snorts. I'm reading this early in the morning, and I think I traumatized the dog when I woke her with the sounds your writing evoke from my body. Wait, er..did that come out right?

Ch. 1 is online!
My students think our library should be the BOOK: Blackwell's Obscure Oligarchy of Knowledge.
My library isn't organized enough to have committees, much less name them, but our union is called SMEA (Somerville Municipal Employees Association) which somehow sounds gross to me. But even better, the local cable channel is Somerville Community Access Television - SCAT!
ELT: Executive Leadership Team. 'Nuff said.
SIGR - Staff Issues Group
None of us smoke.
Policy Management Team
which explains more than we needed to know
Be happy that it was not called the: Policy Management Squad.
Thanks for yet another moment of hilarity! FYI, I've linked to this post on Naming Committees in my "StudentAffairs" blog for LibraryJournal.com. Happy Monday!
(BTW-- My own contribution to the topic is DOLF Day-- Day Of Library-related Fun.) -StaciB
My all time favorite was
CANT: Catalog Action Network Team...it wasn't used, obviously.
Our library went the Dr. Seus route, we have:
PAT- Planning Action Team
YAT- Youth Action Team
CAT- Children's Action team
RAT- Reference Action Team
ISAT- Inclusive Services Action Team
AND MANY MANY MORE, OH THE JOY, THE CHILDISH WONDER!
FOLLOW....Friends of the Living Library of Wxxxxxxxxxx (to protect the guilty!)
Basic User Library Literacy Super High Intensity Training
MOLDI (pronounced moldy)
Mid-Ohio Library Digital Initiative
Nothin says all new e-books quite like MOLDI!
For a library systems workflow group (that's bad enough but wait, it gets better): Ebb & Flow!
Part of the New England Library Association (NELA) is NERTCL- New England Roundtable of Teen & Children's Librarians, I like it because when you say it you can make it sound like you are saying "nerd" (nerdsil). We recently changed the name (had to pass a bylaws thingamajigy and everything) it was the NE Round Table of Children's Librarians...we wanted to include the Teens but not lose the nerd.
My fave non-library related one is the South Lake Union Trolley. In Seattle. Once the acronym was discovered the name was changed. Sigh. I would have like to have ridden the S.L.U.T.
I've secretly developed my own, after being told we need to provide more computer training for our older patrons:
Objectives for Learning and Development, Catering to Opportunities for Older Teachable Seniors.
Not one from my library, but the National Archives of Australia has PANDORA: Preserving and Accessing Networked DOcumentary Resources of Australia!
No joke: BRAINCELLS
Building Reference And Information Nimbleness, Continuing Education and Learning for LibrarianS.
I'm actually kinda proud of that one.
WET: Web Editorial Team ...
Faculty/Library Outreach Group. Need I say more?
SWIG, I think it's System-wide Information Group or some such. I stopped going when I realized it wasn't a happy hour.
We have a chap locally who produces the East London Visual Information System. Onh hon.. thank you.. thank you very much.
I'm in GRR, "Get Research Ready". It does make me kind of snarly sometimes.
^^ nice blog!! ^@^

not a library committee, but the dean of our college recently created the Academic Senate Standing Committee
